“Be proud of you because we can be do what we want to do!”

To be honest, France doesn't rank highly in terms of English language proficiency. It's poorly ranked in English proficiency according to the EF English Proficiency Index .

Apps designed to help you learn English are everywhere in app stores. Giants like Duolingo, Babel, and Memrise dominate the app market. And yet, one might ask, are a few minutes a day really enough to learn a new language?

My high school English teacher would tell us no. She'd even give you this invaluable advice: put the BBC on in the background to fall asleep and use English subtitles when watching your series and films. Back then, using the BBC as a lullaby seemed a bit crazy to all of us…

The aim was to stimulate active listening by working the ears, to get used to the sounds and different accents of the language, to reproduce them more easily and to move away from a French pronunciation.

It is also an opportunity to exercise our visual memory, because seeing the words means absorbing their spelling and grammar, which, in the case of English, does not necessarily follow the same logic as its neighbor across the Channel, France.

Positioning itself as a complement to existing apps on the market , Fabuly offers you the opportunity to develop that crucial active listening skill using great classics of English literature. An app that has already attracted over 20,000 users since its release this year.

Fabuly's story begins with Joseph , its founder, a former Google developer in Zurich. During a trip to Japan, he encountered the difficulty of finding, and also transporting, English-language books. He then conceived a solution that would provide easy access to public domain works, both for reading and for listening to the work in sync with the reading experience.

Active listening by Fabuly / Fabuly for reading and listening to classics in English.

Fabuly is a mobile app that offers an immersive experience, allowing users to simultaneously read and listen to classic works in English. The app features a wide selection of literary masterpieces such as Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Frankenstein , and The War of the Worlds, as well as timeless authors like Jack London, Edgar Allan Poe, and Jane Austen.

One of Fabuly's distinguishing features is its carefully curated selection of books. Each book is meticulously chosen by the team, who also ensure the quality of the audio recordings. Furthermore, the app stands out with its modernized book covers, created specifically to offer an appealing visual experience.

A clear and ambitious mission

Joseph summarizes the company's vision as follows: "Our mission is to make classic literature accessible to everyone by offering an immersive experience that allows users to read and listen to books and short stories in English simultaneously, in a fun and free way."

This innovative approach is already attracting many users. One of them testifies:

"A wonderful app for reading and listening to famous literary masterpieces for free, or discovering lesser-known gems. The selection of books is varied, and I look forward to more additions. The reading experience is excellent, and the audio quality is remarkable, comparable to Audible! In short, this app excels at achieving a noble goal: providing easy access to the treasures of world literature, which is invaluable. Thank you!"

A promising future

Joseph turned to Take Off incubation program to develop and launch his project. Incubated in April, Fabuly is the perfect example of a project that combines technology and culture to meet a growing need.

Since its launch, Fabuly has already surpassed 10,000 downloads on the Google Play Store and was recognized as "Product of the Month" on MobileAppDaily. This positive feedback and public interest are encouraging and demonstrate that Fabuly's approach addresses a genuine need.

Changes are coming soon to the team! To meet new expectations and missions, the team will be expanding with the addition of an IT position to complement the two existing marketing internships. The team is continuously working on adding new content, themes, and features to enhance the user experience.

In summary…

By combining technology, pedagogy and literary heritage, this start-up offers an effective and accessible solution for improving one's English level, while discovering the great classics of literature.

At Plaine Images, we are delighted to see Fabuly's positive evolution and we will continue to support them in their development within our innovation ecosystem.
